Some words have been overused so hard they now signal 'generic candidate' by their presence alone. Here's the hit list.
The overused
- Passionate
- Hard-working
- Detail-oriented
- Team player
- Motivated
- Results-driven
- Synergy / synergize
- Guru / ninja / rockstar
- Go-getter
- Thought leader
- Ideate
- Growth hacker
- Best-in-class
- Utilize (say 'use')
- Leverage (say 'use')
Replace with proof
Every buzzword can be replaced with a specific bullet that shows the trait. 'Detail-oriented' becomes 'Caught pricing bug that would have refunded $180k'. 'Team player' becomes 'Onboarded and mentored 4 junior engineers in past year.'
FAQ
Are ALL of these always bad?
