Do you put references on a resume in 2025?
The short answer is no. Here's the long answer, and what to do when the application asks for them.
'References available on request' is the resume equivalent of saying 'hello, my name is Alex' at the bottom of an email you already signed. Cut it.
The rule
Don't list references on the resume. Don't add 'References available on request'. Send them on a separate page when specifically asked, usually after a first interview.
The references document
Same header as your resume. 3–4 references. For each: name, title + company, relationship (former manager / colleague / client), phone, email.
Ask first
Always ask permission before listing someone as a reference. Ideally give them a heads-up which role and what to emphasize.
FAQ
What if the application form has a required 'references' field?
Fill it — that's asking, not implying. Just make sure the people know they may be contacted.
