How to explain employment gaps on a resume

Name the gap
In your Experience section, add a line: 'Career break — May 2023 to Nov 2024 — full-time caregiving / independent study / travel'. One line, no apology.
Show what you did during it
Sub-bullets for anything real: freelance projects, certifications, volunteer work, open-source contributions. This turns the gap from empty into intentional.
Handle it in the cover letter
One sentence, factual, forward-looking: 'I took eighteen months off to care for a family member and used the time to complete AWS Solutions Architect certification. I'm now fully re-focused on senior engineering roles.'
